Atlanta, GA (August 17, 2026) - At the request of the Atlanta Police Department (APD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, GA. One officer and a woman were injured during the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that on Monday, August 17, 2026, at about 8:45 a.m., APD officers responded to a home in the 1400 block of Clark Howard Lane SW in Atlanta, GA, in response to a 911 call reporting a man with a gun experiencing a mental health crisis. When officers arrived, they entered the home and spoke with the 911 caller in a hallway. During the conversation, a man, later identified as Michael Gates, age 24, of Atlanta, GA, appeared in the hallway holding a gun. Gates shot at the officers, injuring one, before the officers returned fire. Gates was not injured during the incident and was immediately taken into custody. A woman, also a resident of the home, was injured.

The injured officer and the woman were taken to an area hospital. The officer and the woman were treated for their injuries and released.

Gates was taken into custody by APD. APD is investigating the aggravated assault.
