GREENSBORO, GA, UNITED STATES, March 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- While CEOs at Davos pondered world problems over croissants, Dave Thillen was too busy actually solving them while armed with nothing but heartfelt grit, a merry band of volunteers, and his secret weapon: the Dave Dollars.
Dave Thillen, 81, founder of the Thillen Education Foundation (TEF), isn’t your typical entrepreneur. Born into poverty on the tough streets of Chicago, Dave never knew his father, had a mother with an eighth-grade education who raised five children beginning when she was 15 years old, and became the sole high-school graduate in his immediate family. Now, after obtaining a master’s degree in math, a 30-year career with IBM and a stint as a military gymnastics coach at West Point, he’s driven to give back by building pathways out of poverty for Greene County’s youth.
Four Simple Ingredients, One World-Class Recipe for Change
Forget secret sauces. The Thillen Education Foundation’s “Thillen Plan” is a home-cooked, four-course meal for success:
• Skills-Based Learning: Students master practical trades from welding to nursing in partnership with Greene College & Career Academy (and, yes, you can still be a TikTok star on the side). Why rack up college debt when you can rack up skills?
• Career Coaches: Over 230 volunteer career Jedi (including doctors, engineers, pro athletes, helicopter pilots, etc.) commit four years to guiding students through high school. Forget LinkedIn. These mentors offer the real connections.
• Individual Career Plans: Every student gets a custom, IBM-style, measurable road map. Successful futures shouldn’t be left to chance or chicken-scratch notes.
• Meaningful Financial Assistance: “Dave Dollars” (yes, that’s a thing) and “Next Step Funds” help with everything from tuition to steel-toed boots and even entrepreneurial dreams (no cash handouts, just direct investments in dreams).
Georgia’s Top College & Career Academy: Small Town, Big Impact
Greene College & Career Academy (GCCA) was recently crowned Georgia’s “College and Career Academy of the Year” by Governor Brian Kemp. Why? The results from a unique partnership of a school and a community represented by John Ellenberg, CEO of GCCA and Dave Thillen, founder of TEF. The actual words spoken on the stage at the Governor’s Workforce Summit: “Greene College & Career Academy has a one-of-a-kind career coaching program.” Not bad for a rural school outpacing Atlanta’s Goliaths.
Salesforce for Students, Not Salespeople
Managing 800 students, 230 volunteer career coaches, almost 100 teachers, hundreds of parents and over 1,000 donors. Dave runs his program like a Fortune 500 CEO using Salesforce to track everything from Dave Dollars to parent-teacher hugs. Automated emails notify parents when their child is going to meet with their career coach and when their child is going to be recognized and even offer an extra $25 Dave Dollars for them to show up to the ceremonies. (Yes, it’s a bribe, but the good kind of bribe.)
The Results Speak Louder Than Politicians
• 100% graduation rate for all students in the program (80% of the school)
• 128% increase in students attending college (4 graduated classes in the program)
• 165% increase in work-based learning to better prepare for the trades
• Over $2.6 million raised (with almost zero grant support!)
• $320,000 anticipated for the Class of 2026
A Model for Ending Generational Poverty with No Yachts Required
While world leaders debate inequality over champagne, Dave Thillen and his team are ending cycles of poverty one skill, one plan, and one relationship at a time. “Poverty is a lack of resources,” Dave explains. “We’re bringing the resources directly to the students with no middlemen, no red tape, and no excuses.”
The Thillen Education Foundation proves you don’t need a billion dollars or a conference badge to change the world. You need grit, heart, and a belief that every child deserves a seat at the table (or at least an opportunity for some Dave Dollars).
The Thillen Vision
Any student who completes four years in the program should have their first two years of college, career training, or military covered with no strings, no debt. He’s raising the bar (and, yes, still raising funds). There’s just one thing missing: more “career coaches with heart,” and a few good grant makers who prefer results over red tape.
Want to Help?
Dave is looking for career coaches and non-governmental grants (but please, no unsolicited offers for reality TV).
